Jury Statement
2016 november 7th

Early in 2016, TNW issued an open call searching for a candidate to be the first artist-in-residence on the remote island of Siargao.
The goal of the residency is to facilitate firsthand cultural exchange and dialogue between artists based in Austria and in the Philippines.
TNW was looking for artists, real and enthusiastic people, who were ready and willing to dedicate time and energy to embark on an adventure.
The adventure includes getting involved with the local community and producing art within the island environment.

Since this TNW residency in Siarago is new, the jury was requested to consider selecting an artist who would “prove that the program is ready to be launched.”
By the time the submission deadline rolled around, the jury and TNW were inspired by the amount and strength of the applications.

The proposals were as diverse as the artistic practices.
Themes ranged from issues of social and political relevance to investigating media and material.
Artists presented works varying from painting and drawing to music and photography, from sculpture and performance to installation and the written word.

After careful consideration and thorough discussions about the potential benefits to both artist and local community, the jury came to a unanimous decision. We are honored and excited to announce that Anna Ceeh has been nominated to be the TNW artist-in-residence in its inaugural year!

In her installations and performances, Anna Ceeh deals with political, social and gender issues. In her artistic processes, she questions fixed views of aesthetic, ethical and economic values and examines the determining criteria in various cultural contexts. Her actual projects include participation of other artists, artivists and activists. In her projects, she also examines public forms of expressions in our civil society. She employs art as a model of cultural, socio- and gender-political analysis. Anna Ceeh uses art media and sound as a tool to respond to political and social structures to generate new methods. In closing, it is worth noting that most applicants emphasized the positive affect previous experiences abroad have had on their artistic practices. It appears the framework this residency offers is in great demand.

It is our hope that the program will prove fruitful, and that many more cycles will follow to bring further fabulous minds and lives to mingle in Siarago in the years to come.
